Lee’s widely acclaimed Chinese-language films (LUST, CAUTION) span nearly 20 years, showcasing a unique articulation and connective insight of his ethnic heritage, history, and culture. Yet as an Asian American director, he has refused to be boxed or labeled, continuously defying boundaries of genre, period, and subject with each picture. From contemporary drama to comic book tale, Civil War to anti-war Americana, and from martial arts epic to gay western love story, Lee’s bold and diverse filmography has garnered 27 Academy Award nominations and 8 wins. In 2001, Lee became the first Asian American director to win the DGA Award for Outstanding Directoral Achievement in Feature Films for CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, and in 2006, the first to win the Oscar for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (also earning a second DGA Award).
