CBS Daytime Directing Initiative

CBS Entertainment has launched a new Daytime Directing Initiative, which will give participants educational exposure to the process of directing dramatic serials THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS and/or THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. This is not employment and participants will not be doing any work for the shows. The goal is to provide an experiential learning opportunity for talented and diverse candidates with an interest in directing dramatic serials.

The eight (8) week program will cover the following topics such as the function of the directing team and other crew positions, analysis of the script, observation of the directing process, and the editing process.

This educational process will afford emerging, diverse directors first-hand exposure to directing in the daytime drama arena.  In addition to the opportunity to observe the technical aspects of the process, this learning experience allows participants to begin forming relationships with producers and network executives.

Additional information and application materials can be accessed at: www.cbsdiversity.com, click on Diversity Institute and then Daytime Directing Initiative.

Congrats to Ken Cheng!

Congratulations to 2008 CAPE New Writers Awards Television Winner Ken Cheng for being staffed on FX’s WILFRED as a staff writer.

WILFRED is a half-hour, live-action comedy about “Ryan,” a young man struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world until he forms a unique friendship with “Wilfred,” his neighbor’s canine pet. Everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest, Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. While leading him through a series of comedic and existential adventures, Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him.

For more information on Wilfred, please visit the official website at fxnetwork.com/shows/originals/wilfred/.

Congrats to Rey Cuerdo!

Congratulations to CAPE Member Rey Cuerdo on being promoted to VP Business Affairs Administration by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Cuerdo will report to Gelena Weissman, who was promoted to VP Head of Business Affairs Administration.  They will oversee and manage development and production deals at both Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.

Outside of work, Rey is actively involved in the Asian filmmaking community. In 2002, he produced the Filipino feature film SMALL VOICES, which was the official foreign language film entry of the Philippines to the Oscar and Golden Globe Awards. In 2009, he executive produced the feature film DIM SUM FUNERAL, a Chinese American comedy released by HBO.

Letter from CAPE President

Dear CAPE members and supporters,

2011 was a very good year for CAPE.

We celebrated 20 years of advancing diversity in media with a star-studded and glamorous 20th Anniversary Gala at Union Station.  Check out some of the photos here: http://on.fb.me/usccwg.

We successfully concluded the 11th year of the CAPE New Writers Awards, and will launch a new third category in 2012 for writers from and stories about Hawaii.  We continued our wildly popular TV Pitch Lab and Acting Workshops to great success.  We saw our writers getting staffed on shows, selling pitches to networks, and having their feature films made.  And we introduced more of our acting members to the networks and saw more of them on screen than ever before.

When the Tsunami devastated Japan earlier in the year, the CAPE community rallied together to hold a Japan Relief Fundraiser with the American Red Cross.  We also held our first Celebrity Poker Tournament [http://on.fb.me/tG2McP], which was televised.  And we had crazy record turnout at our networking mixers.

We relaunched our website and rebranded the organization.  We hired Ivy Lee as our assistant, and moved into larger offices to accommodate the expansion of the organization.  And we placed two of our office interns at media companies.

Looking to 2012 and our next 20 years, CAPE is thrilled to be launching new digital initiatives to nurture the next generation of digital talent.  We also look to expand our already thriving partnerships with the studios and networks.  And we are forging new relationships and programs with digital media and non-media companies.

You and your contributions make all of this happen.  So before we call it a wrap on 2011, I personally want to thank you for all of your continuing financial and moral support.  I hope you are as proud as we are of this year’s accomplishments, which we plan to exceed next year.  To gear up for 2012, the office is taking a well-deserved break the last two weeks of December.  We look forward to seeing you next year.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Jennifer, and Ivy, I want to wish you a healthy, safe, and prosperous holiday season!

Steve
