CAPE Congratulates Craig Robinson

CAPE would like to sincerely congratulate Craig Robinson (EVP, Chief Diversity Officer, NBC Universal) for receiving the “Salute to Champions” Award presented by the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Craig was honored with the award at the Sixth Annual JACL Gala on Thursday, Sept. 27 in Washington, D.C.

Craig was recognized for his contributions to the media industry including his recent work in the diversity and inclusion space. “It’s an honor to be recognized by an organization that is dedicated to civil rights for not only Japanese Americans but on behalf of all groups – they are truly inclusive in their mission and their work. And I feel very fortunate to be working for a company that values and promotes diversity and inclusion and where I can help make a difference,” said Robinson.

Also recognized were East West Players, Phil Yu, the founder and editor of Angry Asian Man; and the political minister of the Embassy of Japan, Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki.

Founded in 1929, the JACL is the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization in the United States. The annual “Salute to Champions” award honors those have made remarkable contributions in different fields of endeavor. This year the award recognizes individuals and groups in the media.

The 12th Annual CAPE New Writers Awards

The 12th Annual CAPE New Writers Awards was held Thursday, September 27. Hundreds of CAPE members, supporters and friends attended the celebratory event in honor of the 2012 winners. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the awards presentation, readings, socializing and delicious array of food by Citron Catering.

Congratulations to Television Category winner Franklin Jin Rho (REVELATION), Feature Category Winners Ambarish Manepalli & Christopher T. VanDijk (COWBOYS VERSUS INDIANS), and new Hawaii Category winner Cara Fasone (HANABADA DAYS). The winners each received $4,000 and for the first time in CAPE New Writers Awards history, first runner up was awarded $500 and second runner up $250. All finalists also received copies of the latest Final Draft professional scriptwriting software.

Following the awards was the entertaining staged readings of the 2011 winning scripts SLEEPERS by Fredrick Kim and ANGRY ANYMORE by Robin Weckerly, directed by entertainment industry veteran Chil Kong.

CAPE Welcomes New Board Member Christopher Chen

CAPE is proud to welcome our newest board member Christopher C. Chen! 

Christopher currently serves as Vice President of Business Development at Endgame Entertainment. He started his career in the technology industry working at a large enterprise software company.  In various senior positions in the sales and consulting groups.  He lead several worldwide implementation projects, followed by founding a successful strategic consulting practice servicing a handful of Fortune 100 companies.

Christopher has been with Endgame Entertainment since its inception, producing documentary films such as THE YEAR OF THE YAO, examining the journey of Yao Ming from China to the United States during his rookie season, SO GOES THE NATION, about the role Ohio played in the 2004 presidential election, and EVERY LITTLE STEP, exploring the multiple Tony-award winning Broadway show, A CHORUS LINE, which was shortlisted for the 2010 Oscar-award for Best Documentary Feature.  Additionally, Christopher is responsible for generating business in film, television, new media and various entertainment properties.

With a forward eye toward China and the burgeoning film market, Christopher successfully negotiated a China co-production deal for LOOPER starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt, which opened the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.  Additionally, Christopher is producing with Sports Illustrated a 10 part series, broadcast on HBO, called SPORT IN AMERICA, featuring the greatest sports stories told from the fan’s point of view, as well as a feature documentary about Jeremy Lin, the Asian-American basketball player who took the world by storm and has quickly become a global icon.

Christopher attended both University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Davis and holds a B.S. in Management Economics, and B.A. in Political Science, also spending a significant time studying Chinese at National Taiwan University.

An Intro to NBC Universal Talent Diversity Programs

East West Players, Visual Communications, and CAPE is proud to host “An Introduction to NBC Universal Talent Diversity Program.”

It will be an information session with NBC Universal Executives Karen Horne (Vice President of Entertainment Diversity Initiatives), Grace Wu (Executive Vice President of Casting), and Kendra Carter (Director of NBCU Talent Diversity Initiatives) to discuss the opportunities available within the NBCU Talent Diversity programs. NBC Universal’s talent development program includes Writers on the Verge, NBC Scene Showcase, NBC’s Director Fellowship Program, and the Casting Apprentice Program to name a few.

CAPE Advisor Ang Lee To Be Honored At Mill Valley Film Festival

CAPE Advisor Ang Lee‘s upcoming film LIFE OF PI has been selected as the official closing night piece for the 35th Annual Mill Valley Film Festival. In addition, Ang will be honored with the Variety International Filmmaker of the Year Award at the closing night gala. Ang is being recognized for his tradition of breaking new ground and his bold artistic vision.

Founded in 1977, the festival has a long-standing reputation for programming high-profile fare and presented the Bay Area preems of recent Oscar winners SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, THE KING’S SPEECH and THE ARTIST. The festival is set to run from October 4 through the 14 in Marin County, California. Full article available on Variety.

CAPE Welcomes Board Member Bing Chen

CAPE is proud to welcome new board member Bing Chen!

Bing currently serves as the YouTube Global Creator Development & Management Lead at Google. In this role, he is responsible for generating and aligning the strategic vision for initiatives that identify, develop, and distribute the next generation of premier channels and creators–from musicians to filmmakers, chefs to beauty gurus. In addition, he oversees several special company projects that engage more than 100 million content creators worldwide. Bing co-founded and co-leads several initiatives at YouTube, such as the expansion of the YouTube Partner Program globally, the company’s talent incubation program, the YouTube Creator Institute, YouTube’s presence at major industry events and talent engagements, and other strategic projects. Prior to joining YouTube, Bing led Google’s global green energy marketing efforts, launched the company’s digital artifacts initiative, and was a founding member of the Google Crisis Response team. He has also spent time at the Walt Disney Company and Johnson & Johnson.

Bing graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and is the Chairman of the Board of the Ivy League Council, an international intercollegiate youth leadership coalition.
