HBO Buys “Westworld” Adaptation From J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions

Steve Tao ColorHBO is moving forward with the the “Westworld” adaptation. The story is based on Michael Crichton‘s 1973 film and written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The drama features an all-star cast that includes Anthony HopkinsEd Harris, Miranda Otto, Jeffrey WrightJames Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, and Thandie Newton.

Jon M. Chu & Hieu Ho Sell Retro 90s Comedy to Focus Features

Jon M. ChuCongratulations to Jon M. Chu (JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION) and producing partner Hieu Ho for selling their project, CAN’T TOUCH THIS, to Focus Features. CAN’T TOUCH THIS is a high school dance comedy set in the golden era of the 1990s.

“Happy Endings” and “Community” writers Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone will pen the script. Mebane and Basilone are currently producers on ABC’s ’80s-set “The Goldbergs”.

The AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) at the American Film Institute is a hands-on training program committed to increasing the number of women working professionally in screen directing. Selected women will receive guided instruction and produce a project – either a short film or series for the web or streaming services. DWW is open to women with three years or more of professional experience in the arts. The program is tuition-free though participants are responsible for raising the budgets for their projects.

Based on Marvel comic-book characters, BIG HERO 6 is about a young robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada, who forms a superhero team to combat a masked villain responsible for the death of Hiro’s older brother, Tadashi Hamada. Roy Lee and Dan Lin to Produce Anime Adaptation of Manga/Video Game DEATH NOTE

Death NoteThe highly popular manga, turned anime, turned video game “Death Note” will now be turned into a U.S. film, directed by Gus Van Sant (GOOD WILL HUNTING, MILK, ELEPHANT). CNWF Panelist Roy Lee, along with CAPE Board Member Dan Lin, and Doug Davison will co-produce the film with Warner Bros. Both Lee and Lin have been involved in THE LEGO MOVIE and also produced Guy Richie‘s SHERLOCK HOLMES movies.

“Death Note”, which has an international fan base, is a story that follows a high school student who stumbles upon a mysterious notebook that lets him instantly kill a person whose name he decides to write on the book. As the number of casualties increase, an FBI agent investigates and goes after him.
