HBO Launches First APA Short Film Competition

HBO announces the launch of HBO ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN VISIONARIES, a short film competition dedicated to showcasing emerging APA directors with unique perspectives of the Asian Pacific American experience. Three winning films will be awarded cash prizes, premiere at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival in April 2017, and offered the opportunity to license their film to premiere exclusively on HBO (and/or its on-demand, digital, or social platforms) during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May 2017.

The judging panel will consist of HBO executives and a panel of industry experts, including representatives from CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. “This competition aligns directly with our organization’s mission to champion AAPI filmmakers and artists,” said CAPE Executive Director Michelle K. Sugihara. “We are proud to work with HBO to identify and empower new voices in the community.” CAPE also partners with HBO for the CAPE New Writers Fellowship.

The deadline for entries is November 7, 2016. Complete details can be found online.

“Fresh Off The Boat” Launches Tuesday Night for ABC

Freshman shows rarely launch the 8:00 PM timeslot for a network. They usually get a timeslot after a successful, existing show, to give the audience a chance to find it and start watching it. This year, “Fresh Off The Boat” was given the very difficult task of launching Tuesday night for ABC against the #1 network drama “NCIS”, and the #1 network unscripted show “The Voice”. “Fresh Off The Boat” has held its own with a 1.9 rating, better than any show ABC has had in that timeslot in years. Unlike most freshman shows, its ratings have maintained and not fallen. Congratulations to ABC and the producers for a terrific show that has had to find its own audience. Let us know what you think of it.
