CAPE Remembers Iconic Robot Designer Robert Kinoshita

Robert KinoshitaCAPE remembers Robert Kinoshita, who passed away at the age of 100. He was a production designer and art director who designed the iconic robots for FORBIDDEN PLANET and “Lost In Space”.

Kinoshita’s bubble-brained Robot from “Lost In Space” received as much fan mail as its human castmates. He even inspired The B9 Robot Builders, a nationwide organization of fans, to build 100 full-size Robot replicas.

Kinoshita was born in Los Angeles, he grew up in the Boyle Heights area, and attend USC’s School of Architecture. He received his first practical experience on the 1937 film 100 MEN AND A GIRL.

During World War II, he and his wife, Lillian, were sent to a Japanese internment camp in Arizona. They were allowed to leave before the war’s end and moved to Wisconsin. This is where he became proficient in industrial design and fabricating products out of plastic.

Kinoshita returned to California and the movie industry in the early 1950s where he began his iconic career. He was a pioneer who left his stamp in Hollywood.

He is survived by a daughter, Pat.
