Film_Independent_stacked-01Film Independent’s Screenwriting Lab is designed to help screenwriters develop and express their unique voices as writers to take their current scripts to the next level. Through meetings with lab mentors, outside advisors, and other writers in the program, Fellows will receive personal feedback and the necessary tools to revise and refine their scripts for production. Internment“Internment” is a staged reading of a television pilot written by Phinneas Kiyomura, directed by Academy Award winning director Chris Tashima, produced by Ren Hanami and John Money, and presented by the Japanese American National Museum on 02/08 at 2PM – Free with admission to the museum.

“Internment” explores the lives of a gifted but deeply dysfunctional Japanese American family forcibly reunited by the internment of all Japanese Americans during World War II.

“Time Travel is Not for Everyone” is an anthology in the works focused on unlikely time travelers from underrepresented communities who end up in at best unwelcoming situations. Recently writers Heidi Durrow and Koji Steven Sakai announced they are accepting proposals for short stories from writers who would like to be included.

The AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) at the American Film Institute is a hands-on training program committed to increasing the number of women working professionally in screen directing. Selected women will receive guided instruction and produce a project – either a short film or series for the web or streaming services. DWW is open to women with three years or more of professional experience in the arts. The program is tuition-free though participants are responsible for raising the budgets for their projects.

Applications are open, and the deadline is January 7th, 2015.
