2014 CAPE New Writers Fellows

CHRIS WU (TV Fellow) was born in Texas and raised by Taiwanese Methodist immigrant parents who emphasized studies in math and science. Chris went to Yale to become an economist and received his MBA at USC. It wasn’t until working in corporate finance that he decided he needed to follow his creative passion. His first foray into writing was as a reporter for the Yale Daily News, before he transitioned to short films and television pilots. In addition to being a graduate of the CBS Writers Mentoring Program, the CAPE New Writers Fellowship and a Finalist in the WB Writers Workshop, Chris has worked at WME, Fox Television Studios, and in the writers rooms of THE KILLING, THE FOLLOWING, THE EXES, BOSCH, and HAND OF GOD, where he shared a script story credit. He is currently a script coordinator on Amazon’s THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE.

 

EVERLYN CHEN  is horror/sci-fi writer turned seasoned Reality TV Story Producer. An ex-copywriter in men’s advertising, she forayed a sardonic wit and strong eye for visuals, mixed with a love of exploring complex characters from unique backgrounds, into producing episodes for hit shows such as HOTEL HELL (FOX) with famous foul mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay, the Whoopi Goldberg executive produced and GLAAD Media Award Winner show STRUT (Oxygen) on transgender models, BAFTA nominated children’s show MATILDA AND THE RAMSAY BUNCH (BBC), and Emmy-Award nominated, exploration on modern day pioneers ALASKA: THE LAST FRONTIER (Discovery). Her latest show, SWEET HOME SEXTUPLETS has been picked up for series by TLC and slated for a Fall 2018 air date.

DAVID LEE 

DENNIS LUU was born in the City of Angels and before he was of age, cast down to a fiery pit in South Texas. His sole escape was in dark rooms called movie theaters and his bedroom where he would immerse himself in X-Men comics, anime, Japanese video games, TV shows, and movies. With these influences, at CSU Fullerton then UCLA he developed a crowd-pleasing writing style that emphasizes character, fun, and wall-to-wall action. He has optioned scripts to Teddy Zee (PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, HITCH), developed scripts with companies behind movies such as American Made and Hard Candy, and has had scripts taken by producers into the major studios. His accolades include being featured on the Black List, CAPE and Sundance Screenwriters Intensive Fellow, and winner or top ten finalist at the prestigious competitions Launch Pad, Austin Film Festival, Final Draft Big Break, among others. In TV, he was nominated for Fox’s writer’s program and placed as a semi-finalist for ABC and CBS’s.

 

FREDERICK KIM became a staff writer on the USA television series COMPLICATIONS, which premiered in summer 2015, after graduating from the CAPE New Writers Fellowship in 2014. His feature screenplay, CROSSED CURRENTS, is a throwback to classic Amblin films like BACK TO THE FUTURE and THE GOONIES.

 

HELEN SHANG was born in Beijing, China and raised in California. She is a TV writer of dark dramas who has worked on HANNIBAL, HAWAII FIVE-O, and 13 REASONS WHY.

GALEN TONG received his MFA from USC film school where he won the 20th Century Fox Screenwriting Fellowship and the MGM Writing Award. He has produced credits on a primetime network TV and has written features for Asian film studios. His screenplay THE MONKEY KING is the First Prize and Grand Prize Winner of the 2013 Beijing International Screenwriting Competition. Although not an aspiring actor, he has performed as principal characters in two productions directed by David Mamet. Most recently, Galen was Director of Production at a division of Spike TV and is currently a freelance TV Writer-Producer.

 

NIKHIL JAYARAM is a Maryland native and Northwestern alum. He was a story editor on NBC’s hit SHADES OF BLUE after previously serving as a staff writer on drama THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA.  He was recently hired to write a film on the Kohinoor Diamond and sold a pilot to Super Deluxe, and he’s been selected for programs including NBC’s Writers on the Verge, CAPE New Writers Fellowship, the Disney/ABC Fellowship, and the CBS Writers Mentoring Program. Nikhil lives with his brilliant professor wife and their rescue pit bulls.  He enjoys suburban farming, basketball, drumming, strange workout routines, traveling, and self-improvement.
